Harris Tweed Artisans - share resources and pool marketing

The company

Harris Tweed Artisans Co-operative was set up in February 2009 by a number of businesses in the Western Isles making products from Harris Tweed.

This is the first co-operative to bring together people working with tweed and has successfully raised its profile in a number of ways, including presenting the Queen with a bouquet of flowers made from Harris Tweed at the tenth anniversary of the Scottish Parliament.

Benefits of co-operatives

Co-operative Development Scotland (CDS) assessed the group’s needs and arranged support through one of its specialist consultants. CDS contributed to the cost of this specialist consultancy. The co-operative has seen a number of benefits including more effective use of resources by sharing shop space, exhibiting and selling their products together and profit sharing.
