Heart of Argyll Tourism Alliance - an open membership co-operative
Introduction
Loosely bounded by Ardfern, Inveraray, Tarbert and the Sound of Jura on Scotland's west coast, Mid Argyll boasts some of Scotland's finest scenery and history.
To better market the area, businesses including hotels, bed & breakfasts, shops and activity providers have set up the Heart of Argyll Tourism Alliance.
Co-operative Development Scotland helped establish the consortium as an open membership co-operative, meaning anyone can join.
The members have created a website, marketing plan and brand and are working on developments including enhanced tourist signage and dedicated 'Explore for a Day' itineraries.
Collaborative working
"Some of us have tried to market the area individually, but we're one lone voice in a very crowded marketplace," said founder member and co-ordinator Carron Tobin of ruralDimensions. "By working together, we're getting the message out very loudly and clearly and hopefully hitting a broader range of audiences than each of us could do on our own."
CDS explained the benefits of a consortium co-operative and recommended an open membership structure to ensure the local industry was widely represented. Four tiers of membership offer varying benefits, with each member of the founding group looking after different geographic and sectoral areas.
The key benefits include increased influence, credibility and visibility. The co-operative will be able to influence policy and attract funding by representing the local tourism industry in consultations and funding bids.
