Equal opportunities

We are committed to equal opportunities, both as an employer and in the services we provide.

We believe that diversity benefits every resident and business in the country and we ensure that our products and services will be provided to individuals regardless of their:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation.

Realising Scotland’s economic potential

There are moral and legal reasons to promote equal opportunities, but it is also part of realising Scotland’s full economic potential. Embracing equal opportunities will help counter the effects a declining workforce will have on businesses in future and encourage greater innovation in the Scottish economy.

There is also a strong business case for Scottish companies to adopt diversity. Research suggests that an effective equal opportunities policy helps businesses keep staff and find new markets. For example, disabled people in Scotland spend an estimated £8 billion per year.

Equality Act 2010

We are committed to complying with the Act and the associated Public Sector Equality Duty. We await the Specific Duties which are likely to be enacted by the Scottish Government later in the year and will ensure that we respond appropriately to these and any related guidance.

We continue to apply an Equality Impact Assessment methodology to all our policies and projects covering the protected characteristics highlighted above and Human Rights. This ensures we meet the current General Public Sector Duty giving due regard to the elimination of discrimination, the advancement of equality of opportunity and the fostering of good relations.
