Encouraging Innovation

Companies that exploit new ideas to improve products, processes and business models will be able to increase productivity and compete more effectively in the international marketplace.

Our focus is to help Scottish businesses develop a culture of innovation by encouraging more companies to invest in research and development (R&D). We also work with academia to support the commercialisation of research, resulting in new spin-out companies or collaborative ventures.

This includes supporting businesses directly though training, events and R&D funding, as well as introductions to other businesses and academic research partners to explore further R&D opportunities.

What we will deliver in 2008-2009
  • Innovation support for up to 3,000 companies
  • Stimulate an additional £50-60 million of business investment in R&D activity
  • Support 20-30 high value knowledge transfers from research institutions into businesses
  • Support up to 6 Proof of Concept spin-out companies
