A variety of funding and support is available to help develop your innovative business ideas. We can provide guidance on the most appropriate grant for you and support you in the application process.

SMART : SCOTLAND

If your innovation represents a significant technological advance within your industry sector, you may qualify for a Scottish Government SMART : SCOTLAND grant. Funding is available for small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that:

  • are independent;
  • have less than 250 employees; and
  • have an annual turnover of less than €50 million or an annual balance sheet total of less than €43 million

Research and development grant

Small, medium and large enterprises may receive funding for research and development, even if the innovation is new only to your business. The product need not be innovative within a national context.

Technology Strategy Board (TSB)

A programme of funding is available from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) which supports innovative business ideas. TSB also has an advisory role and identifies sectors which would benefit from innovation.

The Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7)

An inspired idea can lose momentum if it exists in isolation. There are grants available from FP7 which encourage Europe-wide collaboration and the sharing of knowledge as a route to successful innovation.

Research and development tax credits

Research and development tax credits were introduced to increase investment in innovation. You may qualify for tax credits if you are looking for funding for an innovative business idea. However, if you are already the recipient of a grant, this may affect your eligibility to receive tax credits.

Regional Selective Assistance

An investment scheme is available for businesses in designated areas of Scotland (the “assisted” areas). If your business is located within an assisted area, you could qualify for funding towards an investment project that will create or safeguard jobs in the business.
