Using the centre
The Energy Technology Centre (ETC) is a unique facility which you can use on a flexible basis, both in terms of access and equipment used. You can use the centre to assess complete energy devices, and it can also be adapted to develop components, subsystems and measurement sensors. You can use existing ETC equipment, or we can assist you in identifying and sourcing additional equipment for your project.
Direct external access to the test cells, overhead cranes, up to 750 kW cooling capacity, cell ventilation and gas detection systems create a versatile facility for the development of a wide range of energy systems.
Experimental capability covers the full spectrum of activities from fundamental research, development and prototype operation through to durability testing and comparative evaluations. Each project making use of the ETC will be discussed with qualified personnel to determine and assist with the overall needs of the project. For example, if a project requires additional technical or engineering support, then this can be sourced from local suppliers.
How long can I use the centre?
You can use the Energy Technology Centre on a flexible basis, both in terms of time and facilities or equipment accessed. Access can be arranged for varying durations ranging from one week to over one year.
How much does it cost?
That depends on the nature of the project, how long it will last, and what facilities and equipment you want to use. Although based on a weekly or monthly charge, the cost will be assessed and confirmed on a project-by-project basis.
What equipment and facilities are available?
A range of equipment already exists within the centre that can be made available for use with projects, however, additional equipment can be sourced and provided subject to an assessment of the project requirements. Existing equipment includes:
- dynamometers
- emissions measurement equipment
- signal test measurement
- rolling road
- engineering/fire-proof laboratory
- engineering workshop equipment
- engineering test cells
- engineering laboratory and machining workshop
How do I arrange access?
Each project using the Energy Technology Centre will be pre-assessed and discussed with qualified personnel from TUV NEL. The project will be assessed in terms of project goals, duration and outcomes and the suitability for the facility will be discussed. A risk assessment, including health and safety issues will also be involved. If the project requires the input of additional technically qualified engineers or technicians then this can also be recommended and sourced.
What is TUV NEL's role?
The ETC is managed on our behalf by TUV NEL, also based on the Scottish Enterprise Technology Park. Experienced technicians and engineers are available to help you set up, monitor and decommission your project. They will also assess projects before implementation, to make sure they are suitable for the centre.
Our Energy Team can help you find additional advice, support and potential funding sources.
