Company background
Multi-Sense Technologies (MST) is a small, innovative, medical diagnostics company that develops tests for early detection of various diseases.
MST's fundamental aim is to be the technology supplier of the next generation In-Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) tests, forging strategic partnerships with well established IVD companies and Government bodies looking to revolutionise existing or developing markets with novel, competitively distinguished IVD technology. Currently MST is developing a range of diagnostic platform technologies that can measure a diverse range of analtyes/tests.
Using the SMART: SCOTLAND award
MST applied for a SMART: SCOTLAND feasibility grant to prove the feasibility of its multi analyte assay platform. The company wished to develop an assay platform that would comprise a low cost, disposable test strip and a low cost hand held meter with the assay platform, allowing multiple analytes to be measured in one disposable test strip. The platform aims to be unique in terms of the associated sensitivity, accuracy, stability, required sample volume and the cost of manufacture. The output of the project shall include data sets proving the performance of the platform and a patent of the novel design features in the assay platform.
The effect of the SMART: SCOTLAND award
MST Director Dr Phill Lowe points out: “MST was a newly formed company and was looking for funding to begin feasibility studies using its next generation platform technology. SMART: SCOTLAND played a pivotal role in establishing an innovative business. Specifically MST was awarded a SMART: SCOTLAND feasibility grant that allowed it to prove out the fundamentals of their technology and add an additional member to the team.”
The SMART: SCOTLAND appraisal process
MST plan to continue its relationship with SMART: SCOTLAND and have been recently awarded a further SMART: SCOTLAND feasibility grant to fully develop commercial products and create jobs in Scotland. “The application process for SMART: SCOTLAND is very straightforward with great support given throughout the process. The turnaround times were very quick with the time from application to gaining the award being around three months.
“For new technology startup companies the SMART: SCOTLAND process is a must. It’s a powerful mechanism that allows new companies to establish themselves in very competitive technology sectors.”
