SureSensors is a young, pioneering life sciences company with substantial experience and expertise in the design, development and manufacture of leading edge diagnostic devices targeted primarily at the home glucose testing market. These devices help diabetic patients manage their disease and these platforms will enhance safety in the hands of the user by giving more accurate results from a home glucose test kit. Systems like these comprise an electronic instrument and a consumable electrochemical biosensor.

Using the SMART: SCOTLAND award

The aim of the SMART: SCOTLAND project was to determine the feasibility of creating a test strip for use in a self monitoring blood glucose test system. SureSensors aimed to develop a test strip that would address the need for a system that is less prone to giving erroneous results when used or misused by a person with diabetes.

The effect of the SMART: SCOTLAND award

Dr Hall explained: “The SMART: SCOTLAND project has greatly assisted SureSensors in moving the company forward in that they have been able to demonstrate that their concept is feasible. Further work is required to turn this into a product, but we are now better placed to raise the necessary funds. It is hard to see how we could have achieved this without SMART: SCOTLAND support."

The SMART: SCOTLAND appraisal process

On discussing the SMART: SCOTLAND appraisal process, Dr. Hall said: “The evaluation process itself was very straightforward and there was good communication regarding both progress and queries throughout. We found the work completed by the patent office, while no substitute for a full search, the most worthwhile aspect from SureSensors’ perspective. The grant was approved in a 6 week turnaround period, well within the eight weeks quoted in the Guidance Notes, and extremely reassuring in the modern day."
