Toasting leadership success

Building a strong strategy and achieving efficiencies are core goals for any business. For whisky company John Dewar, success in these areas was also key to raising its profile with parent group Bacardi. Leadership development at several levels enabled the firm to win significant investment from its owners.

Toasting leadership success

"We were able to work very closely with the management team and understand how each part of the business affects the whole," says Sue. Creating global leaders

As its operation expanded across the globe, Peak Scientific Instruments needed to grow managers who could work autonomously. A review of workforce skills was the starting-point for the company to identify and train its future leaders, and set about creating the right culture for its ambitious growth plans.

Were you looking at the needs of the top team?

It covered people at all levels. We had a senior management team pretty well locked down, but we needed to identify the people who were going to step up to the mark and be the managers of the future.

Unexpected benefits

As a relatively new director, Keira Proctor of the A. Proctor Group recently signed up for a leadership development programme, keen to develop her expertise. She reveals how the experience is already advancing the business in sometimes surprising ways.

What were your expectations of the programme?

To be honest, having had a few bad experiences on courses in the past, I tend to avoid them. But I’ve been genuinely surprised, not just by what I’ve learned, but by how much of it I’ve been able to apply to my own way of thinking, and the business.
