Growing the next generation

Faced with a sudden change in the funding environment, BDL Hotels in Glasgow needed to transform its business model. Joining the Leadership for Growth programme helped the firm’s senior figures take it in a new direction. Now the same programme is bringing on a new generation of leaders in the company.

What were the particular skills gaps that you wanted to address?

When the funding world changed in late 2008, we had to react and change our model from running our own hotels to winning more third party management contracts. Up to that point we hadn’t really had to market or sell ourselves, so there was a real need to develop skills in that area.

Mentor support aids growth

The departure of a director left Marie Owen running her business alone. Scottish Enterprise and Business Mentoring Scotland suggested a mentor, but she feared no one would be interested in supporting such a small, if growing, business. However, a match with a former HBOS director offered just the advice and financial support required to support a big leap for Location Scotland.

What have been the biggest benefits from mentoring on a personal level?

I was the only person in management and Stuart offered an excellent sounding board. If I was worried about something, he was someone completely impartial to talk to who, by this point, had a good understanding of the business. His counsel was always genuine and honest.
