The New Futures Fund (NFF) aims to reduce social exclusion and disadvantage amongst 16 to 34 year-olds in Scotland - funding a range of projects to help vulnerable young people who have problems getting a job.
People supported by NFF projects may have found mainstream support services unsuitable for their needs. With the help of the projects, they can get the skills and confidence they need to get into the labour market.
NFF aims to help:
- homeless people;
- those with drug and alcohol addiction problems;
- those with a background of offending and anti-social behaviours;
- “chaotic” young people;
- those suffering from mental health problems;
- disabled people;
- those with learning difficulties; and
- a number of other groups.

| New Futures Fund projects |
The Fund – launched in 1998 - is uniquely Scottish and is led and managed by Scottish Enterprise.
Phase 1 was from April 99 - March 2002 and Phase 2 was from April 2002 - March 2005. A Ministerial decision has been taken to extend the New Futures Fund for a further period up until the end of March 2006. This money has been allocated to existing projects that have not secured alternative funding. It is the Scottish Executive's intention that the Employability Framework, due in late summer, will help support the shift away from projects to more comprehensive sustainable local provision.

| Evaluation |
The evaluation of Phase 2 assessed the extent to which NFF has managed to reach the most disadvantaged unemployed people and assisted them to overcome barriers to employability and to progress and achieve sustainable gains. The evaluation also focuses on the developmental themes for Phase 2 of the NFF initiative:
- defining and refining the NFF approach to enhancing employability;
- building up networking, with other agencies or parts of the same organisations to source essential services for clients or to which clients can be referred;
- pursuing sustainable gains for NFF clients once they leave their NFF projects; and
- promoting and facilitating the process of mainstreaming NFF.

Policy Mainstreaming Matrix The NFF team has been working to identify any policy developments which might affect delivery and/or funding of employability services in the future.
There appears to be a number of positive developments which recognise the need to incorporate employability into mainstream services to help people to move in to work, training or education more effectively. The document below details them.
