Major international piping events return to Scotland
Date:
05 August 2011
Two of the biggest piping events return to Glasgow during August 2011.
'Piping Live', the world's biggest international piping festival, takes place from 8 – 14 August at various venues across Glasgow.
The festival includes over 150 events - from workshops to masterclasses, ceilidhs to concerts and many street performances. This exciting and entertaining festival is expected to attract over 30,000 spectators.
During ‘Piping Live’ the World Pipe Band Championships will also take place on Saturday 13th August. Over 230 bands and 8,000 pipers and drummers from as far afield as Australia, Canada, USA and New Zealand will arrive in Scotland to participate. Over 40,000 spectators are expected at Glasgow Green to watch this spectacular event.
Both events form part of SE's Destination Glasgow programme which supports key events which are of international profile, of strategic importance to Glasgow and generate significant economic impact to the area.
Extensive research carried out during both events in 2010 showed that the World Pipe Band Championships generated £17.6million for the local economy whilst Piping Live generated more than £2million.
