Globally competitive sectors create exciting opportunities for advanced materials

Date: 01 May 2012

Demand is growing for ever more sophisticated solutions from the materials market. We have identified Scotland’s strong skill base and the opportunities for growth in this area.

The materials market is significant, accounting for over £10 billion turnover in Scotland alone. Demand is growing for ever more sophisticated solutions from the supply chain in a range of sectors including:

  • Oil and gas
  • Renewables
  • Aerospace
  • Food and drink
  • Construction

We have recently published a report, Materialising a Brighter Future, which has identified Scotland’s strong skill base in this area and the opportunities for growth in both production of the materials and their application and deployment:

  • Smart packaging (films, inks and chemical markers for product integrity)
  • Composites
  • Electronic functional materials
  • Biomaterials, textiles and hybrids for sustainable construction
  • Coatings and surface treatments
  • Materials for batteries and fuel cells
  • Metals and alloys

Hear more about the findings from the foresighting report and our new Material Innovation Service at an event in Edinburgh on 4 May.
