Scotland wins bid for major international chemicals congress in 2011
In the wake of the IUPAC Congress at Glasgow’s SECC in August 2009, another major chemistry Congress is coming to Glasgow in 2011. Led by Professor Colin Suckling from the University of Strathclyde, a team of chemists from across Scotland has been successful in their bid to host the International Congress of Heterocyclic Chemistry in 2011, a UK first. This biennial Congress - rotating through Australasia, North America, and Europe - is the principal event of the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry.
Heterocyclic chemistry is at the heart of a great deal of the output of the chemical industry from drugs to dyes and materials, and is also a major area of academic research. In planning the Congress, the Scottish team wants to:
- work in partnership with the Scottish Industrial Chemistry base in terms of the scientific programme content; and
- ensure that Scotland is showcased as an important location for world class chemistry.
It is important that the breadth of applications of heterocyclic chemistry is represented in the programme offering something from and for every relevant company.
Learn more about the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry on their website
As plans develop, details will be published in the newsletter for the Scottish Chemicals community and a link provided to the Congress website, currently in development. In the meantime find out more about the 2009 Congress on Heterocyclic Chemistry to be held in Newfoundland, Canada between 2-7 August 2009.
