Record year for Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh has strengthened its position as Scotland's leading research institution by earning a record £210 million to fund its research in 2006/07 – an increase of 50 percent on last year.


Imaging techniques enable doctors to make more accurate diagnosis and be more specific at the site of treatment.

Clinical Research Imaging Centre

Operational from 2008, this new centre will combine 3-T whole-body magnetic resonance imaging with positron emission, computed tomographic imaging and a cyclotron.

The Collaborative Optical Spectroscopy Micromanipulation & Imaging Centre (COSMIC)

COSMIC provides visualisation technology and advanced computing facilities for image process and analysis. Works in collaboration with biological scientists in live-cell imaging and imaging of molecular interactions. COSMIC has a unique and impressive optical equipment base used to image, trap, manipulate, probe and measure the properties of molecules, including advanced conofocal and multi-photon microscopes, optical tweezers, ultrafast mode-locked tuneable lasers, spectrometers, and detection systems.

The SFC Brain Imaging Research Centre for Scotland

Ongoing major research areas - strokes, schizophrenia, ageing and dementia, brain tumours and other common disorders. More recently the Centre provides image assessment for studies of the affects of treatment for pituitary tumours and acute strokes.
