Heriot Watt opened in 1971 and was one of the very first science parks in Europe. It specialises in research and development and benefits from easy collaboration and interaction between tenants and academic and research staff from the University.
A condition of the research park is that all of the tenants must be able to display the potential for interaction with one of the University’s Schools. This encourages communication and reinforces the strengths of the University, and the tenant companies. It also helps with the recruitment of a well-educated suitably skilled workforce and increases the incidence of clusters of excellence. Based in the Edinburgh Green Belt, just 20 minutes from Edinburgh city centre and six minutes from the airport, the Park enjoys a quiet and extremely attractive location which is carefully maintained by the University.

The Park offers accommodation to spin-outs, semi mature and mature companies. There are currently more than 40 companies on site, benefiting from the University’s expertise in electronics, computing, life sciences, energy and convergent and crossover technologies, most apparent in the medical application of physics.
Space in advance laboratory buildings can be leased in units ranging from 1,000 square feet or more. Companies based at the Park can also access the library and sports facilities, a discounted on-site hotel and catering facilities and are able to use the University labs and workshops.
