
The University's academic structure is based on three Colleges containing a total of 21 Schools; Humanities and Social Sciences, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and Science and Engineering. The campus is split into three main areas:
The Central Area - grouped around the city; Little France, the University's Medical School and Kings Buildings the science campus for the University.
There are over 350 undergraduate degree courses and more than 160 taught postgraduate programmes at Edinburgh, attracting over 23,000 students annually.

The University is a world leader in many areas of scientific research.
- The School of Informatics is recognised as the largest leading department in the UK and one of the top four centres for computing in the world.
- The Centre for Infectious Diseases is one of the world's largest with an annual spend of approximately £15 million.
- The University's College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine is one of only 5 in the UK with a 5 star rating in hospital-based clinical subjects.
- The Institute for Stem Cell Research is a world leading institution and coordinating partner of EuroStemCell and The Centre for Neuroscience Research is home to the National Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease Surveillance Unit.
Across each department The University prides itself in its work with commercial organisations including Lab901, a close partner to the Division of Pathway Medicine, Wolfson Microelectronics and Agilent Technologies.
