The understanding of genomes and their products is undergoing dramatic changes as new technologies offer access to molecular data on an unprecedented, and hitherto unimaginable, scale. These data are enabling new approaches in biological research, in which one may study and compare whole-genome data as, until recently, one might have studied and compared single genes. At the heart of such endeavors lies the ability to curate, query, compare, and understand huge quantities of genomic data, effectively and robustly, using bioinformatics.
