Redundancy or changing your job
Dealing with redundancy or changing your job can be a stressful time for anyone. The good news is that there's plenty of help around. When companies announce major closures or job losses, organisations like SDS and local councils are usually brought in to support employees and help them move to new jobs and re-training opportunities.
Anyone being made redundant has rights. Check out the Low Pay Commissions guide and make sure you get what you're entitled to. There's also lots of advice on the BBC Watchdog site and the Citizens' Advice Bureau site.
If you want to retrain or explore new career options, talk to a Careers Scotland adviser. To find your nearest office call 0845 8502 502.
If you'd like to set up in business, the Business Gateway (0845 609 6611) can help you. It runs a variety of courses and events - many free. Just call the main number and you'll be connected to someone in your area of Scotland.
Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE) provides a partnership approach which ensures local public sector agencies deal with potential or proposed large-scale redundancies quickly and effectively.
Dedicated local response teams have been set up across Scotland, standing ready to offer the necessary support and advice. Key agencies involved include:
- The Skills Development Scotland (SDS)
- the Scottish Government;
- Jobcentre Plus;
- Local Authorities;
- Inland Revenue; and
- STUC.
Alternatively you might want to sign up to a number of SDS-backed programmes and gain useful new skills to land your dream job.
