Industry Baseline Study

Commissioned by Scottish Enterprise’s Aerospace, Defence and Marine (AD&M) team in association with industry trade body A|D|S Scotland, the study was undertaken to assess the size, scope and economic impact of the sector in Scotland.

Findings include:

  • The sector benefits from a highly skilled and trained workforce.
  • There is a strong capability and a high concentration of engineering departments in universities relative to Scotland’s population.
  • Traditional sectors such as marine are well placed to help develop the growing renewable energy industry.
  • Despite low-cost production elsewhere, major firms still seek high quality suppliers from countries with an established AD&M company base.

ADM2Renewables

Planned investment of £100 billion in offshore wind over the next 10 years is a huge opportunity for Scottish businesses. Development of wave and tidal energy devices placed to tap into some of the the best natural energy resources in Europe will also provide opportunities for the Scottish engineering supply chain.

The ADM2Renewables event provided an introduction for companies who may be interested in tapping into additional targeted support that we could make available, aimed at helping identify offshore renewable energy market opportunities for AD&M company products and services and in starting to develop a business plan to address them.

Successful standardization and effective use of standards is crucial for defence acquisitions, as it helps different weapons systems and military personnel work together.

UK Defence Standardization (DStan) is the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD's) centre of excellence for standardization and its management across defence acquisition. DStan develops and maintains the UK Defence Standards' portfolio and provides advice and guidance to MOD project teams and industry on all aspects of standardization management, including the selection and use of appropriate standards in defence acquisition.

You can contact DStan on the DStan website. Registration is required, but all UK Defence Standards are downloadable free of charge.
