Aims

The key aims of the Scottish Construction Industry Plan are:

• To ensure continuous improvement in the performance of the Scottish construction industry
• To help increase productivity, sustainability, quality and pride in this important industry
• To support a construction industry that produces best ‘whole life value’ in our built environment
• To improve the image of the industry
• To influence the future work of the Scottish Construction Forum, Scottish Construction Centre and other key stakeholders

Priorities

The priorities of the Scottish Construction Industry Plan 2007-2012 are captured in four themes that reflect the opportunities and challenges within the industry.

Positioning

It is important that the industry strengthens its co-ordinated approach in order to:

• Identify and address strategic themes
• Influence and inform politicians and stakeholder organisations
• Demonstrate improvement

The industry also needs to look at ways of innovating, educating and taking a long term view of its development.

Procurement

The Scottish construction industry should encourage the public sector to become best practice exemplar clients. It should also promote greater understanding of the important role played by each participant within the procurement process.

The industry has to recognise the important role that good procurement practice plays in the design, planning, delivery, and quality of a construction project.

People

In order to improve health and safety, productivity and increase client satisfaction, the workforce must be competent, qualified, retained, assessed and upskilled.

Future training and education should meet the industry’s needs for emerging technologies, new build, repair and maintenance and the heritage sector - and help achieve the goal of 100 percent qualified workforce

Planet 

The construction industry must be encouraged to:

• Design for sustainability
• Build with minimum waste
• Dispose of waste responsibly
• Use sustainable resources
• Reduce energy consumption
• Recycle and reuse materials
• Create minimum pollution
• Cause the least possible environmental impact
