Renewable energy reports

Innovation in offshore wind foresighting report

This paper is the first in a continuing series detailing the findings of technology and market based research carried out by Scottish Enterprise to identify opportunities open to Scottish industry, higher education and other organisations in segments of the energy market.

National renewables infrastructure plan: stage 1

This report from Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise sets out the conclusions of the first stage of the development of the national renewables infrastructure plan (N-RIP).

National renewables infrastructure plan: stage 2

The purpose of this report, from Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, is to support the development of a globally competitive offshore renewables industry based in Scotland.

Smart power grids

Scottish Enterprise has identified key opportunities in smart grids

Strategic environmental assessment

A strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of the national renewables infrastructure plan has been undertaken in accordance with the Environmental Assessment (Scotland) Act 2005.

The purpose of the SEA is to integrate environmental factors into the N-RIP, by identifying potential environmental effects and measures for their mitigation, and ensuring that this information is made available as the plan is progressed.

In the case of the SEA of the N-RIP, the SEA will also assist in providing site developers and investors with information regarding the potential environmental issues pertaining to the development of the sites, and how they can best be overcome.

The environmental report and the appendices document the assessment undertaken to date. You can download the N-RIP stage 2 report, the environmental report and the appendices from Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Offshore decommissioning: opportunities for Scottish-based businesses

During the next couple of decades decommissioning of offshore structures will be another major opportunity for Scotland. It is vitally important that we understand the size and nature of the opportunity and develop the appropriate strategy to maximise the economic impact to Scotland.

We commissioned this study as a first step in identifying the opportunities and telling the industry about them. The focus of this report is on decommissioning offshore platforms.

In addition the report covers other decommissioning sectors such as pipeline decommissioning and drill cuttings where the information and knowledge available is somewhat limited. Re-use of installations for new purposes is also considered.

Windfarm construction: economic impact appraisal

This report presents the findings of a review of the three windfarm developments at Clyde Valley (Airtricity, South Lanarkshire), Dalswinton (Airtricity, Dumfries and Galloway) and Harestanes (Scottish Power, Dumfries and Galloway). The review was undertaken on behalf of Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire and Scottish Enterprise Dumfries and Galloway.

Marine renewable (wave and tidal) opportunity review

With most of an estimated £130 million of global capital investment earmarked for UK activity, this report finds that a diverse range of Scottish sectors are well placed to capture work in marine renewables projects.

The report has been completed to give companies wishing to be part of the supply chain an overview of the key issues, supply chain structure, project lifecycles and main players in the sector.

Key facts and figures in the renewable energy industry

The Scottish renewable energy industry already has around 90 specialist companies working in this field, ranging from fuel cell technology to wind turbine manufacture. Scotland is also rich in natural wind and marine resources and has a long record of hydroelectricity generation.

This report underlines the opportunities that exist for Scottish companies in the renewable energy sector over the next five years and beyond.
