Strategically designed to support the development of translational medicine

The University of Edinburgh's renowned researchers actively conduct bench-to-bedside medical research in cooperation with the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. In many cases, local start-up companies provide the early proof-of-concept data for the transfer of research from bench-to-bedside.

NHS Lothian and the University of Edinburgh facilitate the highest quality collaborative academic and clinical research in a joint office at BioQuarter that ensures regulatory and research governance requirements are met.

Edinburgh provides the rigorous clinical research infrastructure that is needed for optimal clinical trial management. The Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit, provides a range of support in the design, administration and management of academic clinical trials led from BioQuarter. In addition, securely managed pre-clinical bio-safety testing facilities are located at BioQuarter.

There are a significant number of links to the biomedical industry through research collaborations and licensing at BioQuarter. Investigators in Edinburgh are involved in commercial trials with more than 40 companies, including leading pharmaceutical companies. Both the University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian have a wealth of experience and a strong track record in managing the Intellectual Property arising from joint and sponsored research.

BioQuarter is well-positioned in Scotland’s established and growing cluster of medical device companies, offering device and diagnostic companies access to a talented workforce with highly relevant skills and experience. This location offers an ideal environment for attracting and retaining key staff, and has established the supply chain for medical devices in the area.

Access to University of Edinburgh resources

BioQuarter provides access to specialist skills and equipment made available through the University of Edinburgh and related service companies. This includes access to Grid computing through the National e-Science Centre. Opportunity to use these vital resources will benefit emerging companies who may not have the sufficient funds to acquire these assets on their own.
