In some cases a technique known as 5S (sometimes called 5C) is used. These are five terms beginning with "S" used to create an organised workplace suitable for visual control and Lean production. The technique helps to ensure the workplace is always clean and tidy, well organised and has the right equipment in the right place at the right time.
The five steps:
- Sort - Clear out your area of all unwanted equipment and mess.
- Store - what’s left (and ask "what’s the best way to store what’s left")
- Shine - Clean the area and equipment thoroughly.
- Standardise - Specific instructions, to ensure steps 1,2 and 3 are maintained.
- Sustain - Audit regularly to make sure everyone is doing what they said they would do.
