New processes helped BCF track inventory and resources
The challenges for the business
To optimise available work capacity and meet customer demands, BCF Technology was keen to introduce Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), re instigate Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) controls, and to implement material resource planning (MRP) software. BCF Technology is a specialist in the design and manufacture of diagnostic ultrasound systems for veterinary and animal husbandry applications. The firm has been in the marketplace for over 20 years and employs 28 workers at its Livingston factory, selling products worldwide.
How SMAS helped
Working closely with both management and staff on the shop floor, a new project team took forward the key actions needed to drive the installation of MRP on a pilot product. The team identified responsibilities and timelines and achieved the target milestones. Early efforts were focussed on verifying that the company had re-established the controls of ESD, aimed at reducing the risk of electro-static damage to units or components, and that the processes were robust and sustainable.
What Happened
Ultimately the on-site company team was responsible for achieving all the key milestones, and the role of SMAS was one of a facilitator and catalyst. A clear plan for the next 100 days, including a staggered roll-out of MRP to all product lines following the pilot project, was agreed.
Reviewing the needs of the MRP system helped the management team to clearly establish the KPIs for the business and determine the format and monitoring schedule for these measures. The factory layout was changed to improve efficiency, with a general materials store area being created to replace the smaller storage areas within the factory.
What was the impact for BCF?
ESD controls have now been re-instigated. The MRP pilot has also been a success, while the development of KPIs has helped to optimise the company’s operations. The developments involve every employee and have been led by four members of staff.
Outcomes
In terms of project scope, the staggered roll-out has allowed staff to become proficient with each of the new procedures in turn. The KPIs are capturing the long term improvements made in areas such as inventory management, allowing the business to track its progress.
“SMAS provided a much needed reminder of good manufacturing practices and were able to assist in managing the project of improvements. They facilitated our project meetings and ensured our targets were achievable and focused.”
