The technology areas of electronics, photonics and sensor systems (EPS) underpin activity across all industrial sectors and throughout the consumer market.
The electronics industry designs and manufactures electronic end products (such as mobile phones, computers and digital clocks) and electronic components (such as semiconductor devices – used in the manufacture of more complex products). Electronics are a core component of most modern electrical products, typically accounting for over 20% of production costs.
Scotland
In Scotland EPS encompasses a range of technologies including ultrasonics, lasers, MEMS, PCB, mixed signal microelectronics and design. With over 40 years industrial experience in these technologies there is a deep skill set in the 400 companies and the 100 research groups in Scottish Universities.
The adoption of existing EPS technologies in new applications in the healthcare, transport, energy, consumer and environmental sectors yield benefits felt by the technology providers in the device industries and by the technology adopters in the end-use markets.
Developing these technologies locally and deploying them in global markets is a key attribute of the sector in Scotland.
