The textiles sector remains an important contributor to Scotland’s economy, with annual turnover of £876 million. Over 647 companies directly employ 10,000 people across Scotland, with the sector being an important regional employer in the Borders, Tayside and Ayrshire. 30 percent of businesses are located in these rural areas. Export values remain high despite the recent economic downturn, bringing £390 million into the Scottish economy.
