The Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service (SMAS) is delivered by Scottish Enterprise and covers Highlands and Islands Enterprise and South of Scotland Enterprise areas. This is a fantastic opportunity to join Scotland’s national economic development agency.

Our Opportunity Managers are at the frontline, working directly with customers, and we are looking to recruit dynamic individuals to join us.

As part of our Opportunity Management approach, SMAS works to deliver improvements across Scottish manufacturing businesses, from start-ups to global enterprises. We help companies stay competitive in a changing landscape. We help business improve their productivity through improving supply chains, internal manufacturing processes and adopting new technologies.

Working with a team of proven industrial leaders, you will help businesses prepare and plan for the future. By solving problems and proposing innovative solutions, you’ll make a positive contribution to improving Scotland’s productivity in sustainable manufacturing, supporting new jobs, good jobs, and green jobs.

You’ll spend most of your time with clients, guiding them through immediate tactical challenges as well as longer term strategic change. Every client is different, and you’ll be working with them to promote a productivity agenda for sustainable Scottish manufacturing with likely activity in:

  • Working with manufacturing leadership to focus on the ongoing development of organisational culture and operating performance through delivery of improvement projects
  • Developing strong resilient supply chain capability within our manufacturing sectors offering global competitiveness
  • Developing Manufacturing 4.0 roadmaps for Scottish manufacturers stimulating the ambition to Invest for the future

The qualities you'll bring

An effective team player who can work across business units with ease, you’ll bring credibility, solid experience and influencing skills. Often taking companies on an improvement journey which can last months, or even years, your enthusiasm and tenacity will need to last the course.

You must be able to demonstrate how you’ve delivered sustainable improvements in an operational environment, together with demonstrable ability in key areas such as:

  • Leading others through change
  • Effective project management skills and case studies of deployment
  • Knowledge and experience of advanced manufacturing technologies, systems and digital techniques that combine people, process, technology, and data to deliver increased productivity across the business and support our Manufacturing 4.0 service
  • Experience and delivery of operational excellence and manufacturing problem solving methodology – for example, Lean, Six Sigma, EFQM, Kaizen
  • Supply chain management and development
  • Effective facilitation
  • Coaching and mentoring skills - for example, ILM Diploma
  • Comfortable working across all aspects of business enterprise and supply chain
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills

Experience in the manufacturing industry is essential and preferably in a leadership role.

Whether you are keen to share a wealth of experience, or looking to develop your career further, this role offers plenty of variety.

You will also need a full driver’s licence and access to a car – the role involves travel throughout Scotland.
