Scottish Enterprise is Scotland’s national economic development agency and a non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government. To deliver a significant, lasting effect on the Scottish economy, we work with partners in the public and private sectors to find and exploit the best opportunities. Scottish Enterprise is committed to growing the Scottish economy for the benefit of all, creating more quality jobs and a brighter future in every region.

Scottish Enterprise provides specialist financial readiness advice to boost the growth and export potential of Scottish businesses by supporting their access to finance requirements.

Our financial readiness service provides guidance about the most appropriate funding packages for businesses. Our team enables them to meet their growth and export ambitions by working closely with them and sharing knowledge, experience and networks as required. This funding can be sourced from the public sector, the private sector or both.

The difference you'll make

As part of the Financial Readiness team, you'll help high-growth small or medium enterprises prepare to raise growth capital, working capital or both from a variety of funding sources.

Your expert support and input into detailed action plans will help these businesses work towards becoming attractive targets for funding. Typically, you'll focus on their commercial proposition, business strategy and model, funding strategy, and available funding options. Some businesses may also need guidance about overcoming financial difficulties.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing guidance on business plan preparation, financial projections, pitch presentations, deal structuring, funding and funding agreements
  • Providing guidance on Scottish Enterprise's support options and helping businesses access these
  • Providing market information on available debt, equity and grant funding options, as well as funder requirements
  • Helping to develop and promote the financial readiness service and tools that businesses can access when they're looking to raising funds

The qualities you'll bring

To be successful, you will need to have an excellent grasp of financial statements. You'll preferably be educated to degree level, with an appropriate qualification in accountancy, banking or investment, or have equivalent relevant experience.

As well as this, you should understand the challenges faced by export and high-growth businesses - including strategic and financial planning, sales and marketing, building management teams, and corporate governance.

You will already have experience in providing business support and guidance – ideally with direct experience of raising external funding, such as risk and working capital. Ideally, you'll have a large and effective network in the corporate finance, investment and banking community.

The following qualities are crucial for this role:

  • Strong customer relationship management and interpersonal skills
  • Strong facility in communicating with customers and stakeholders at all levels
  • Corporate finance skills and experience, with the ability to analyse financial statements and other business documentation
