The role

Innovation is one of Scottish Enterprise’s key priorities – it’s vital to a thriving economy. We help businesses identify and exploit new opportunities and overcome challenges. We believe innovation is the key to sustainable growth, competitive advantage and international success.

Join us as Innovation Specialist and help businesses in the Glasgow, Ayrshire and West of Scotland region launch new products and services.

You’ll do this by:

You’ll work closely with companies in different sectors with different challenges, but your support will always be built around how they can grow through innovation. Your expertise in research, product and service design will inform their commercial decisions and identify invaluable development opportunities.

You’ll also help businesses target and apply for the right funding at the right time, to boost their innovation journey.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Defining and delivering the right support for every business
  • Establishing and nurturing strong relationships with clients — you’ll give support, know their priorities, and take opportunities to them
  • Building strong partnerships with other public sector and academic partners — you’ll navigate the support landscape with ease to help Scottish small-to-midsized enterprises (SMEs) achieve innovation success

Who we're looking for

You’ll be confident providing innovation support to a range of businesses. Your time working in the industry means that research, product development, or service development come as second nature and you’re passionate about helping businesses grow.

You’re also customer focused and curious — if you can deliver creative solutions and like to solve problems in less conventional ways, we’d love to hear from you.

Some of the skills, abilities and experience we’re looking for:

  • Diverse industry experience to reflect the range of businesses we work with – in research, design, product or service development
  • Experience of demonstrating creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem solving in industry
  • A knowledge of innovation approaches and tools we’ve never found one tool that fits all problems, but if you know your business model from your value proposition canvas, you could soon be shaping innovation support for a variety of SMEs
  • A history of providing business advice or consultancy. You’ll be results driven, but relationship-led and able to demonstrate how you’ve directly helped to make a difference
  • Strong customer focus and ability to generate business leads – you’ll be as happy working with a referral as you are building your own connections and uncovering businesses that want to use innovation to do ground-breaking things
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office products or similar

Ideally, but not essentially, you’ll also have:

  • A knowledge of the Scottish business and innovation support landscape – this experience could come in many forms (whatever your knowl like, we’ll fill in the gaps so you’re up to speed)
  • Experience working across a wide range of industry sectors would be great, but if you have a passion for key innovation principles and a customer focus, we’ll help you adapt them to a broader range of sectors.
  • Experience of working strategically – being able to see the ‘bigger picture’ is key to helping companies start their innovation journey.
  • Experience of commercialisation of new ideas. Without commercialisation, innovation is just invention. So we help businesses examine business models and routes to market.
  • Good general business and finance knowledge – we’re not looking for an accountant, but we’d like you to know your way around a balance sheet (we offer a range of training if you don’t).
  • Project development and management experience – we provide the right amount of support depending on need. So you’ll shape and manage support and see projects through to completion. This is something you can easily learn on the job.

What we offer

If successful, you'll gain access to the following benefits:

  • Membership of the Scottish Enterprise Pension and Life Assurance Scheme – a pension based on your final pensionable salary, flexible retirement options and generous life assurance cover
  • Up to 43 annual leave days a year (including public holidays) with the opportunity to buy additional holidays
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • A health cash plan
  • Our Employee Retail Benefits Scheme
  • Our Employee Assistance Scheme

If you're interested in this role, please complete your application form by 8 February 2023.

Interview dates:

  • First interviews – 22 or 23 February 2023
  • Second interviews – 7 March 2023
