Salary: £44,276 (plus £5,000 London Allowance)
Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week) with flexible working options considered

Scottish Development International (SDI) is Scotland's trade and inward investment agency. SDI helps businesses from around the world do business in or with Scotland.

We’re looking for a motivated Lead Generation Specialist to join our London team and help attract inward investment to Scotland. As part of SDI — a global international business hub with a geographical remit spanning the rest of the UK and Ireland market — this is an exciting opportunity to work with a range of UK and international businesses to help create jobs in communities across Scotland.

The role

You’ll design and deliver a series of business engagements, showing prospective investors the value of being based in Scotland and helping to secure their investment.

You’ll mainly focus on manufacturing and energy transition opportunities. As such, you’ll have the opportunity to develop strong sectoral knowledge, refine your sales skills and use your own initiative and creativity as part of our lead generation team.

You will have several key responsibilities in this role:

  • You'll develop and implement plans to identify, engage and generate inward investment leads from across our prioritised target lists of UK & Ireland-based businesses. These plans will be aligned with our Opportunity Area plans, with a particular focus on target companies in the energy transition, engineering and manufacturing spaces.
  • You'll identify and generate inward investment leads from a targeted list of existing investors in Scotland (both account managed and non-account managed), to identify either job expansion or safeguarding opportunities.
  • You'll build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You’ll develop credibility, knowledge and influence through personal networks to deliver against assigned inward investment performance metrics – including the number of sales meetings, qualified prospects and engagements generated and transferred to Business Development colleagues.

Who we're looking for

A skilled communicator, you’ll be able to develop strong relationships with colleagues and external contacts, while having the confidence to influence people at all levels.

You relish networking, getting in front of target customers, solving problems and collaborating with others to achieve target goals — displaying initiative and resilience and calling on your expertise in consultative sales and business development practices.

Your skills, abilities and experience should include:

  • Experience in B2B customer relationship management, with a high level of confidence dealing with senior business contacts
  • Proven ability to deliver in a challenging, consultative sales environment, and manage customer objections
  • Ability to develop a broad understanding of Scotland’s key sectors and propositions for inward investment and of Scotland’s service offering for investors, so you can engage credibly in business discussions
  • Experience building and leveraging personal networks to deliver business objectives
  • Experience leading and contributing to virtual project teams to achieve common objectives

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • Experience in a client-facing inward investment role in an economic development agency
  • An understanding of economic development and the market dynamics and drivers for foreign direct investment
  • The ability to travel within London, the UK and, very occasionally, overseas to attend business events outside routine working hours

What we offer

If successful, you'll gain access to the following benefits:

  • Membership of the Scottish Enterprise Pension and Life Assurance Scheme – a pension based on your final pensionable salary, flexible retirement options and generous life assurance cover
  • Up to 43 annual leave days a year (including public holidays) with the opportunity to buy additional holidays
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • A health cash plan
  • Our Employee Retail Benefits Scheme
  • Our Employee Assistance Scheme

How to apply

If you're interested in this role, please complete your application form by 8 February 2023.

Interview dates:

  • First interviews – 21 to 22 February 2023
  • Second interviews – 28 February to 1 March 2023
