EU funding for research and innovation

Main Content

Horizon 2020 is the European Framework Programme to support and promote research and innovation from 2014 to 2020. With a budget of €71 billion, the programme provides financial support to boost Europe-wide research and innovation whilst bridging the gap between research and the market.

To this end, support will also be given to innovative enterprises to develop their technological breakthroughs into viable products with real commercial potential.

Horizon 2020 is divided into three main areas:

  • Excellent science
  • Competitive industries – through strengthening leadership in enabling and industrial technologies, and greater access to capital and support for SMEs
  • Tackling societal challenges – including climate change and environment; sustainable transport and mobility; secure, clean and efficient energy; food safety and security; healthy ageing.

Opportunities for innovative businesses are mainly available in the second and third areas.
