Windaba 2021

Are you interested in the wind energy opportunity in South Africa? Explore opportunities at Windaba, 2021 - South Africa's annual wind energy conference and exhibition. Join the event in person or take part virtually with our support.

Market opportunities

Until 2011 there were no wind farms in South Africa, however due to the national Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) there are now 112 projects by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) of which wind is the biggest contributor to the IPP generation in terms of MW (46%).

By 2030, 22.7% of South Africa’s electricity generation will be provided by wind, and there is currently a procurement round in place – Bid Window 5 – which is expected to procure 1600MW of wind power.

While there will be more projects submitted than allocated, there are a number of wind farm developers looking at producing green hydrogen for export purposes in South Africa in the latest round of projects.

To date, all wind projects in South Africa have been onshore, but new research published in March 2021 by the University of Stellenbosch has shed some light on the potential opportunity in the offshore sector.

The wind energy sector in South Africa is well organised and represented by SAWEA (South African Wind Energy Association) and they advocate on behalf of their members for any investment and development in the wind industry.

Attend in person or virtually

You're invited to join Scottish Development International's hybrid trade mission to the annual must-attend African wind energy conference and exhibition, Windaba 2021.

The primary theme for 2021 is Renaissance of the Wind Energy Industry – Delivering Economic Benefits for South Africa on 7-8 October 2021 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

At this stage the conference organisers are planning for the Windaba 2021 conference to be hosted as an in-person event, however delegates will also be able to attend the conference virtually. Our international team will be hosting a stand at the event promoting Scottish capabilities in the wind industry and assisting with meeting arrangements. Provision will be made for those organisations/individuals interested in attending in-person or who have representatives in South Africa.

What's involved?

The proposed mission programme will focus on the wind energy industry and will provisionally include:

  • Virtual pre-mission briefing meeting
  • Virtual market information and presentation practice with GlobalScots
  • Program of virtual meetings arranged (if required)
  • Advice and assistance prior to, during and following the mission from Scottish Development International staff
  • A chance to virtually network and exchange information with others on the mission
  • A virtual space on the Scottish stand at Windaba (logo and graphics)
  • Inclusion in the WINDABA brochure

We're also finalising discussions with the conference organisers to host a virtual side-event promoting Scottish capabilities.
