Summary

Spain is one of several countries that has seen major growth in the health and wellness sector in recent years.

The increased incidence of dietary intolerances, allergies, related conditions and new eating habits (vegetarian, vegan, flexitarian) provide sales opportunities for free-from functional products in Spain.

Currently there are very few Spanish companies producing these products, sourcing them instead from countries like Italy and Germany.

Therefore, opportunities exist for Scottish companies in some principal categories: free-from, vegan, vegetarian, high-protein, soft drinks, snack products and baked goods.

Scale of opportunity

74% of households in Spain consider it important to follow a healthy diet.

According to Euromonitor, free-from retail sales in Spain reached 1.2 billion USD in 2018, an increase of 12% on the previous year. Within the free-from category, the retail value sales of free-from dairy increased 17% in 2018.

According to the Coeliac association’s 2017 Spain report, around 500,000 people (1.5% of the population) are coeliac. The Spanish gluten free sector was worth approximately 80 million EUR in 2017, with an annual growth rate of 15%, placing Spain fifth for market share in Europe behind Italy, the UK, Germany and France.

Kantar highlights that ecological products grew by 14% in 2017 compared with non-ecological food, which only grew 2%.
