Work in Scotland's tourism industry? Looking to develop your leadership skills? This comprehensive series of leadership skills courses, delivered across Scotland, provides accredited leadership training and ongoing professional development for new and experienced leaders.

What's it about? 

If you're looking to develop your leadership skills, the Scottish Tourism Leadership Programme will give you the confidence to make decisions and get the best from yourself. It will provide you with the skills, knowledge and insights required to grow as a leader within your business, community and wider destination.

Delivered across Scotland, the programme offers high-quality, accredited leadership training and ongoing professional development, giving you the opportunity to:

  • Develop personal skills and expertise
  • Gain insight from fellow participants and and learn from industry and destination experts
  • Become part of a growing network of people working together to develop innovative tourism opportunities

Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, South of Scotland Enterprise and Skills Development Scotland are working together to deliver the programme, which will run until March 2022.

Introduction to tourism leadership 

Online courses running throughout 2021-22

The economic, social, and cultural impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic present unprecedented challenges for destination leaders. As part of the Scottish Tourism Leadership Programme, join likeminded, motivated tourism leaders on this fully-funded, 3-day online course to help your business and destination respond and recover from the impacts of the pandemic. It will cover:

  • Place and destination leadership and development
  • Understanding the importance of the holistic nature of the end to end customer journey
  • Understanding market trends and drivers (such as digital and sustainability)
  • The critical need to enhance market resilience for innovation, visitor experience and product development

There are eight courses running throughout 2021-22, some of which will be customised around specialist sub-sectors.

Destination Leaders Programme

The Destination Leaders Programme is a fully funded, online course which brings you together with like-minded individuals. Get the knowledge and skills to work effectively as a destination leader and learn about international best practice, insights and networks.

The programme consists of 12 online workshops run between October 2021 and March 2022. By taking part, you'll:

  • Improve your leadership skills and knowledge
  • Learn more about destination development and leadership
  • Consider your customer journey from start to finish
  • Understand market trends and drivers for sustainable growth
  • Identify your stakeholders and partners and how you can work collaboratively with others
  • Look at innovative ways to deliver new products, services and experience for market resilience

It's open to individuals from tourism businesses and organisations across Scotland with a key and active role in the business. You must also be able to show ambition, commitment and passion for developing yourself, your business and your destination, and demonstrate this in a personal statement submitted with your application.
