Improve through innovation

Workplace innovation not only helps create more empowered employees – it can also make businesses more efficient, productive and profitable.

For companies who practice workplace innovation, staff turnover is over a fifth lower, while absences are reduced by nearly a quarter.

One study showed that of the 6,000 European firms surveyed, 68% saw a reduction in costs while 85% experienced increased sales.

Putting your people first

Your employees will individually and collectively have a treasure chest of ideas to make the business better. Make sure their voices are heard.

“When you start going into people’s emotional intelligence you understand that with different people, you have to communicate with them in different ways to get them to respond.” - Duncan McConchie, Laggan Outdoors

Crucially, you’ll need to identify which ideas will actually work.

Having a process in place to prioritise ideas against your business objectives will help you avoid overload. Share the template you use to filter ideas with your employees to ensure it’s a transparent process.

Getting started

Ask yourself these five questions to find out if your company is fully using its most important asset, your people:

  • Are you a modern leader?
  • Can your employees share their ideas?
  • Could staff receive more recognition?
  • Do your employees have the right skills to deliver?
  • Do you have the right mix of people for the job?

Simple measures you can put in place now

  • Reassess the workspace – physically and technically – to maximise team working opportunities
  • Enhance job satisfaction and wellbeing to increase staff motivation and enable optimum performance
  • Listen to your employees’ ideas and prioritise against objectives
  • Challenge teams to continuously improve themselves
  • Enable employees to use their knowledge, ability and creativity to the fullest
  • Fail fast - take risks and learn from your failures to develop a more entrepreneurial culture

How we can help

Since the launch of our workplace innovation service in August 2016, we've supported more than 200 companies to improve their productivity and better engage employees. In that time, we’ve expanded our support to include:

  • A new series of workshops to help you deliver your objectives while driving up productivity, innovation and competitiveness
  • A fund to support new workplace innovation projects
  • Introductory taster sessions for those companies taking the first steps to embrace people-centred practices in their business

Companies who have engaged with us are already seeing the benefits. 85% of attendees of our workshops said that the events had highlighted a new opportunity for their business. While 43% left the sessions having identified a new customer or collaborative partner.

Is there any funding?

Yes, your business could be eligible for a workplace innovation grant to support motivating staff beyond pay. For example, to recognise the benefits of diversity, reward and support learning and development.

The workplace innovation fund can contribute up to £5,000 towards activities that will allow your business to introduct new and innovative workplace practices.
