The Scottish Investment Bank

Our investment arm, the Scottish Investment Bank (SIB), operates across Scotland in partnership with Highlands and Islands Enterprise

Encouraging investment into Scottish companies with global ambitions

Securing growth capital is critical to the success of our businesses. SIB exists to help increase the supply of finance, and to help more Scottish SMEs with growth and export potential access it.

Our activities support the delivery of the wider Scottish Enterprise business plan by stimulating the SME funding market in Scotland. We work with both Scottish SMEs and UK and international investors to stimulate deal flow in Scotland.

Co-investing in companies

We manage a suite of funds, through which we co-invest in SMEs. We do this alongside private partners in an innovative, shared risk model. Investments range from seed deals through to total deal sizes of up to £10 million.

  • Scottish Seed Fund
    £20,000 - £250,000 for ambitious young companies
  • Scottish Co-investment Fund
£100,000 - £1 million for early stage SMEs (partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund)
  • Scottish Venture Fund
£500,000 - £2 million for SMEs at development and expansion stages (partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund)
  • Scottish Recycling Fund
Loan finance to improve waste recycling capacity (delivered in partnership with Zero Waste Scotland)

We're the cornerstone investor in the privately-managed Scottish Loan Fund, which provides flexible, mezzanine loans of £250,000 - £5 million to growing SMEs.

Managing our investments

We have one of the largest portfolios in Scotland. We work intensively with our investee companies, adding value through dedicated portfolio managers, who support companies’ ongoing development and finance needs. In particular, we can facilitate access to wider Scottish Enterprise products and services.

Investing in Scotland's renewables industry

We deliver the £103 million Renewable Energy Investment Fund (REIF) on behalf of the Scottish Government and its enterprise agencies. REIF promotes the use of energy from renewable sources and drives further investment into key areas of Scotland’s renewables industry, such as marine energy, community owned renewable initiatives, and renewable energy district heating.

Working with investors

We work with private investors from around the world, including business angels, angel syndicates, venture capital groups and corporate investors.

In particular, we are very well connected with Scotland’s globally recognised Business Angel network, facilitated by our links with LINC Scotland, Scotland’s world leading angel network.
