Summary

The Baltic Sea is an emerging European offshore wind market and Poland has the potential to become its biggest construction site. Offshore wind farms are predicted to meet about 20% of Polish energy demand by 2040.

Currently, Poland is developing 10 offshore wind projects, with the bidding for a further 11 due to begin in 2025. These projects are being established by international developers in partnership with Polish energy companies.

Final investment decisions for most projects will be made in 2022. Construction of the first projects will begin in 2024, with grid connection slated for 2026.

Scale of opportunity

Poland plans to invest around £26 billion in offshore wind farms by 2040, with an aim for these facilities to to generate 5.9GW by 2030 and 8–11GW by 2040.

The Polish grid operator will also earmark around £1 billion by 2030 for the construction or upgrade of substations and selected transmission lines.

This opportunity is open to innovative Scottish companies across all supply chains (DEVEX, CAPEX, OPEX) that can significantly reduce cost in construction and operations & maintenance, in partnership with Polish companies.
