Be part of building Scotland’s future

Scottish Enterprise is Scotland’s national economic development agency. We help Scottish businesses to grow nationally and internationally, to become more efficient and innovative, and to access the funds they need to develop. We also attract overseas companies to invest in Scotland.

This is a great opportunity for a confident, hands-on Senior Financial Accountant (comfortable working without supervision and able to deliver results quickly) to contribute to wider change initiatives with a well-known and respected organisation.

The role

Our Accounting Services team within the Finance Directorate is responsible for all aspects of external financial reporting – from our Annual Report and accounts to statutory tax returns and reporting to the Scottish Government.

You’ll be a lead professional within this team, helping the Accounting Services Team Leader maintain accurate, reliable finance records. You’ll also lead on preparing accounts for Scottish Enterprise and subsidiary companies.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing high-quality working papers and supporting schedules for assigned accounts areas
  • Working with external auditors (Audit Scotland) to provide supplementary information and respond to audit queries
  • Ensuring a clean and unqualified audit report in line with a challenging accounts timetable
  • Translating complex Accounting Standards and Treasury guidance on financial reporting, and highlighting changes and future developments likely to impact on Scottish Enterprise
  • Applying judgement to develop and update relevant accounting policies and procedures for use at an organisational level
  • Advising colleagues across Scottish Enterprise on compliance with accounting policies, the tax consequences of transactions, and project development

Who we’re looking for

We're looking for someone flexible, adaptable, and used to managing their own workload to strict deadlines. You’ll also be someone who enjoys problem-solving. You’ll use your expert knowledge and well-developed skills to innovate, influence, and persuade.

A keen eye for detail is a must, as well as an ability to produce accurate, reliable finance records.

You’ll also need:

  • A recognised CCAB accountancy qualification (CA, ACCA)
  • Recent and relevant post-qualifying experience in a financial reporting role
  • An appreciation of International Accounting Standards, UKGAAP and the public sector financial framework within which we operate
  • Reasonable knowledge of the basic principles of UK Corporation Tax and VAT legislation
  • An understanding of Financial Systems

Ideally, but not essentially, you may also have:

  • Knowledge of Infor SunSystems finance applications (SUN Accounts)
  • Experience in a public sector environment
