Industry factsheets
Get up-to-date information on Scotland's industries with our series of factsheets.

Our factsheets focus on some of Scotland's most forward-looking sectors. Browse by industry and find opportunities that are available to you.
Industries
Hydrogen
We commissioned this series of factsheets to help supply chain companies understand the specific opportunities available to them in our growing hydrogen industry.
Each factsheet offers a detailed breakdown of the components required to build a key piece of hydrogen infrastructure that we expect to see deployed in Scotland in the near future.
Over the coming months, we'll publish new infrastructure factsheets on topics such as:
- Production technology for both green and blue hydrogen
- Hydrogen storage and distribution systems
- Hydrogen vehicle refuelling stations
- Hydrogen product plants
The factsheets will help you identify areas in which your existing products and services can be used directly for – or adapted to fit – hydrogen technologies. You’ll also get a sense of whether you’ll need to invest in any new equipment, facilities, or staff skills to benefit.
-
Electrolysers
Learn about the role of electrolysers in hydrogen production and the components involved in building them.
-
Low carbon hydrogen from methane reforming
Learn about methane reforming, a cost-effective way to produce hydrogen that makes use of Scotland's existing skills and supply chains.
Clean heat
We commissioned sustainable manufacturing consultancy HSSMI and sustainable engineering development consultancy Arup to develop a series of factsheets. The factsheets take a detailed look at the manufacturing components used in the clean heat sector.
In them you'll find:
- Insights on manufacturing and fabrication
- Information on key market opportunities
- Help for businesses looking to enter or expand within the sector
You can use the factsheets to help you assess whether the skills and expertise from your existing business can be applied to clean heat. They can also help you understand whether you'll need to invest in new equipment, facilities, or staff skills.
-
Heat generation
This factsheet discusses components used in technologies that produce heat efficiently and sustainably. This includes heat pumps, boilers, and geothermal drill rigs.
-
Heat network distribution
Learn about the components used in technologies that transport heat from generation sources to end users. This factsheet covers pipework, pumps, valves, and storage solutions.
-
Heat in properties
Find out about heat distribution components in buildings. This factsheet includes information on radiators, underfloor heating, infrared panels, and hot water storage.
-
Technology enablers
This factsheet covers digital and control technologies that enhance heat system performance. It includes sensors, thermostats, actuators, and design applications.
-
Building energy efficiency
Learn about components that help reduce heat loss and improve building performance. This factsheet covers insulation, ventilation, windows, doors, and off-site construction.
-
Energy centre construction
Find out about key infrastructure components used to build and equip energy centres. This factsheet covers thermal storage, large pumps, structural steel, and electrical components.
Offshore wind
Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and South of Scotland Enterprise have commissioned BVG Associates to produce a series of factsheets about fixed and floating offshore wind projects.
These factsheets are designed to help Scottish businesses that are interested in joining the offshore wind supply chain – particularly manufacturing and fabrication companies.
In the factsheets, you’ll find:
- Offshore wind manufacturing opportunities
- Useful background information
- Weights, lengths, and quantities of commonly used sub-components
You can use the factsheets to help you assess whether the skills and experience of your existing business can be applied to the offshore wind sector.
With limited serial production manufacturing facilities for many of the components – and with Scotland as a world leader in the deployment of offshore wind – there is a major market opportunity in the Scottish supply chain.
-
Secondary steel
This factsheet discusses the steel components that fit on the primary structure of the turbine. These can include platforms, walkways, ladders, lifts, railings, cable protection structures, and sacrificial anode support structures.
-
Anchors and moorings
Find out about the different types of anchors and mooring lines used to secure a floating offshore wind turbine to the sea floor and the components used to build them.
-
Cable protection systems (CPS)
Learn about the various systems and components used to protect cables against impact, abrasion, fatigue, and over-bending. These include vertebrae bend restrictors, dynamic bend stiffeners, and cable sleeves.
-
Cables and accessories
Find out about the two main types of cables used in offshore wind, as well as accessories such as buoyancy elements, connectors, joints, and hang-offs.
-
Corrosion protection
Explore the materials and components used in corrosion protection systems to preserve equipment above and below the waterline. Methods include protective coverings and active or passive cathodic protection.
