What does it take for an ambitious Scottish AI startup to tap into viable European technology markets?
Fast-scaling firm ProfessorMe has the answers.
Based in Edinburgh, the company selected Switzerland as a launchpad to expand its AI-powered learning products into Europe. The business is forming a subsidiary company in the Canton of Vaud, supported by Swiss public enterprise agency Innovaud.
To help the organisation settle in Switzerland, Innovaud has assisted with company formation, office accommodation, visas and rights to work.
ProfessorMe was incorporated in 2023 and already serves several customers in the Scottish learning and development sector. The company's expansion into Switzerland is its first venture in exports and international markets beyond Scotland.
Scottish Enterprise and its global arm, Scottish Development International (SDI), have helped the firm with export market evaluation. This was carried out by our in markets specialists through our Enquiry Fulfilment and Research Service (EFRS).

Switzerland-UK free trade agreement
The company became interested in Switzerland after meeting with representatives of Innovaud in Edinburgh and London. The Switzerland-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA) helps to facilitate business areas for companies, including finance, legal, professional and digital flows. This includes data transfers, source code and cross-border e-services.
Daisy McConville, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer, says: "Access to support in Scotland and Switzerland has made the process of setting up an office in Lausanne straightforward. Our export plan will inform our next steps into Europe. We worked closely with Scottish Enterprise professionals, Suki Jagdeo, and previously Paul Campbell, and Account Manager Iain Hay."
Suki Jagdeo, International Trade Specialist, says: “We’ve supported ProfessorMe since November 2023 with tailored support that has included in-market expertise, strategic advice and bespoke competitor research. From helping to shape their international strategy to connecting them with key contacts, it’s been exciting to see their innovative AI products gain real traction.”
Among the company's AI products is Professor Dynamo. The firm says this is the world’s first AI professor that gives learners an end-to-end user experience in 175 languages. Another product is Verbaliser, which provides low-cost voice cloning and lip-syncing tech. ProfessorMe's products help learners optimise their potential. It also assists universities and non governmental (NGO) organisations to teach and train thousands of learners simultaneously in their mother tongue, and retrain people cost-effectively.
Discovering demand for its innovative products would not have been possible without careful overseas' market research.

AI discussions with the French President
ProfessorMe's proficiency in scaling innovation resulted in an invitation for Dr Kate Smith to attend an historic discussion on AI and emerging technologies. This was held as part of the state visit to the UK by French Republic President Emmanuel Macron in July 2025.
The conversation brought together leading figures in AI, including Demis Hassabis, Nobel Prize winner and co-founder of Google DeepMind, and Arthur Mensch, CEO and founder of Mistral AI.
This invitation followed the company's success in winning a ‘Start Up of the Year’ award in October 2024 at the Women’s Enterprise Scotland Awards. The award was sponsored by Scottish Enterprise partner, Business Gateway.
Dr Kate Smith adds: “Our aim is to help students become better learners by giving them the tools to overcome challenges in their studies, personal organisation and academic performance. Our products help the academic development of students from undergraduate to PhD level."
Looking ahead, ProfessorMe has ambitions to scale its revenue, with its activity in Switzerland giving the company access to new markets in Europe. In September 2025, it will carry out a market development trip to Italy, France and Switzerland.
The impact of its activities has brought credibility and kudos in Switzerland and in the UK. Investors are drawn to the Scottish firm's international ambitions as it demonstrates its drive to scale and innovate.
Dr Kate Smith sums up: "The future view is that we will set up an international business with great support from Scottish Enterprise, SDI and Innovaud. Each organisation has eased our process to deliver our international strategy and create jobs in Scotland and Switzerland. Entering the European market is central to our planning. Having the launchpad from Switzerland serves this international strategy perfectly."
