We brought innovators and investors together in Glasgow, providing innovators with the opportunity to pitch their products and services to financial backers.
We supported innovators to get pitch ready, helping organisations to develop and refine their content and delivery of their pitches. We provided a total of eight innovators with commercial support, mentoring, and guidance to help them market their products and services to investors.
The showcase event in Glasgow provided them with the opportunity to put their skills into practice to a room full of potential investors.
Our hybrid event proved to be popular across the industry and saw an encouraging range of online and in-person attendees. We heard from a range of hydrogen innovations pitched at the event, from new electrolyser solutions to local energy systems for rural and off grid communities.
Support from SHINe
It was great to see eight small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) putting their one-to-one support from our team into practice, as they pitched their products and initiatives to a room full of investors and financial backers.
Hychor, a green hydrogen company, is a great example of how we've helped an innovator enter the Scottish hydrogen space. It's developed a first-of-its-kind electrochemical system that can produce hydrogen straight from seawater. To support Hychor, we provided structured commercial guidance to help the company clarify its early market opportunities.
We also delivered a market-focused report, facilitated conversations with relevant Scottish hydrogen stakeholders, and improved its visibility across the market. Read our Hychor case study.
On the day
Barclays, our hosts, provided an overview of the types of investment it can offer for innovators in Scotland. The team highlighted the benefits of the Barclays Innovation Banking scheme, connecting start-ups, scale-ups, and innovation businesses to mentors and investors.
Ten organisations pitched their products and services at our event. As part of the SHINe programme, four of these have received commercialisation support from the team.
The investors in attendance listened to each pitch closely, looking for examples of breakthrough innovations that can address current barriers to hydrogen deployment. The organisations stated how their innovations can improve testing capability, lower the cost of hydrogen, address scalability issues, improve reliability, and enhance safety practices.
SHINe members in the spotlight
The event’s innovator line-up also included two of our members – the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), and Heriot-Watt University.
Heriot-Watt University spoke to investors about its iNetZ+ initiative. iNetZ+ is a global research institute collaborating with business and industry to platform solutions that accelerate the deployment of low carbon energy such as hydrogen.
Presenters from each organisation focused on how their initiative would strengthen the Scottish hydrogen supply chain and help the industry to overcome various barriers to deployment.
Our audience of investors, including Barclays themselves, then quizzed each innovator after their presentations. Examples of some of the questions pitched to our innovators included how their products and initiatives work, return on investment, and general value for money.
A range of innovations
We also saw innovator pitches from a range of other companies, including Clyde Hydrogen, Flexergy, Logiq Systems, and more.
Clyde Hydrogen pitched its decoupled hydrogen electrolyser system. It claims that its product can significantly reduce the cost of green hydrogen, while creating a much safer product that removes the possibility of gas mixing.
In Flexergy’s pitch, the team spoke to investors about its compressor solution that focuses on addressing a key part of the hydrogen supply chain, transportation, and storage.
Paul Codd at Flexergy spoke about how its compressor allows its customers to store and distribute compressed gas at high pressures. The product claims to offer lower cost, flexible hydrogen transportation, with a modular design that can be adapted for different projects.
Logiq Systems, formerly known as Hydrologiq, pitched its online operational intelligence platform specifically tailored for clean fuels such as green hydrogen.
Its system will help to manage and monitor hydrogen assets, streamline delivery, and simplify audits and regulatory compliance. The system aims to help hydrogen producers and asset owners to accelerate their profitability and better interact with their customers.
At the event, investors also listened to pitches from Entropyst, Hydroluminum, Robert Gordon University and Water to Water.
Networking and collaboration
As part of the event, innovators also got the chance to network with investors throughout the day.
It was encouraging to see the level of interest that our investors showed in both innovator pitches and the wider direction of the Scottish hydrogen industry. Events like these will help to position Scotland as a leader in hydrogen creativity, as companies try to answer the sector’s biggest questions and barriers.
