Scottish fintech Terrapin disrupts the US market

Edinburgh-based fintech Terrapin is proving that Scottish innovation can disrupt global markets, and it’s now scaling for international success.

Terrapin is a shining example of Scotland’s ability to innovate and disrupt global industries. Founded by a small, agile team in Edinburgh, the company set out with a bold ambition: to challenge players in the US financial data market and democratise access to advanced tools for a wider range of businesses.

A credible challenger across the Atlantic

Terrapin’s strategy focused on a niche but high-value entry point: US municipal bond data. Once it secured this beachhead the company rapidly gained traction among fintech firms and institutional investors in a market traditionally dominated by large incumbents. By delivering modern, accessible solutions, Terrapin positioned itself as a credible challenger with a compelling value proposition.

International growth support 

Scotland’s reputation for technical excellence and innovation underpins Terrapin’s success. The company’s Edinburgh headquarters remains the hub for product Research and Development (R&D), with a planned investment of £3.2 million to help create 24 highly skilled jobs. This demonstrates how Scottish talent can create globally competitive solutions from a local base.

Terrapin’s journey has been accelerated by strategic support from Scottish Enterprise and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Scottish Enterprise helped Terrapin’s leadership team to spend dedicated time in-market, critical for shaping its US market strategy through the International Growth Support (IGS) scheme.

The fintech received on-the-ground support from Scottish Enterprise’s in-market team during these visits. It also benefitted from engaging with several local GlobalScotsopens in a new window who shared valuable insights and advice.

Overseas market exploration 

Terrapin's success was supported by:

  • The US Municipal Bond Buyers Conference (2025) — participating in an expert panel session to develop early brand awareness and foster relationships with key target clients.  
  • Fintech Meetup (2025) — joining a Scottish fintech delegation at one of the industry’s most important conferences, which included a programme of one-to-one meetings with leading financial institutions.
  • Boston Fintech Week (2025) — accompanying Scottish Enterprise and DBT teams at key events across the conference. This deepened its network among target client groups, raising brand visibility in one of North America’s leading fintech hubs.  

The firm's commitment to spending time in-market has ultimately paid off: Terrapin has secured early client wins in the US, laying the foundation for sustained growth and a direct market presence.
