Introduction to PlusZero

PlusZero is a Scottish clean energy company founded by David Amos. It's focused on helping hard‑to‑electrify industries to move away from diesel through practical, deployable hydrogen solutions. This approach means you can reduce emissions without waiting for major infrastructure changes.

Its work includes hydrogen internal combustion engines (HICE), temporary/mobile hydrogen power, and integrated clean fuel supply chains designed for difficult to electrify sectors. It also deploys hydrogen generation projects with an added focus on heat and oxygen.

PlusZero operates across three tightly linked business units:

  • Engine Systems
  • Power
  • Energy

The company enables full end‑to‑end delivery from green hydrogen production and storage through to on‑site deployment, retrofit solutions, and technical support. At the centre of this capability is the Creed Hydrogen Skills & Innovation Centre (CHSIC) in the Western Isles.

CHSIC produces green hydrogen and oxygen itself while also serving as a hub for practical training, prototyping, and innovation. PlusZero is already demonstrating real‑world traction across construction, maritime, ports, temporary power, events, and remote infrastructure.

How the technology works

PlusZero focuses on simple, deployable hydrogen power that works for construction sites, ports, remote operations and temporary power needs. Its system combines three elements. These elements are:

  • Producing clean hydrogen locally where viable
  • Supplementing hydrogen with flexible sourcing where required, delivering it through mobile storage and refueling
  • Using this hydrogen in rugged hydrogen engine generators

This means customers can decarbonise specific operations without changing their whole fleet or waiting for major infrastructure upgrades. PlusZero provides the fuel, equipment and on‑site support together. This approach makes it straightforward for organisations to start using hydrogen in real‑world settings and build confidence as their needs grow.

SHINe’s role in supporting PlusZero

Through the SHINe commercial support programme, we provided PlusZero with structured one-to-one mentoring. This has helped the company to refine how it presents itself, including its messaging, investment narrative, and organisational focus.

SHINe’s support has included:

  • Clarifying the core value proposition around off‑grid decarbonisation, diesel displacement, and closed‑loop hydrogen systems
  • Mapping and rationalising PlusZero’s corporate structure to reflect how PlusZero Energy, PlusZero Power and PlusZero Engine Systems can combine into a coherent proposition
  • Providing investment strategy support, particularly relating to when investment would make sense at the business-unit or project level
  • Supporting production of the PlusZero investment deck and other materials through investment readiness work
  • Engaging PlusZero around the Creed/CHSIC project, including analysis of match‑funding opportunities and potential avenues for additional Scottish Government support

Impact in Scotland and commercial traction

PlusZero has already delivered flagship hydrogen deployment projects in Scotland and across the UK. These projects are detailed below.

Western Isles Hydrogen Innovation Project (Creed Park, Stornoway)

Powered by £1.1 million match-funded Scottish Government support, delivering hydrogen from onshore wind capacity and establishing the Creed Hydrogen Skills & Innovation Centre. This project is a partnership with Cmnhairle nan Eliean Siar, UHI North West and Hebrides and GreenCat.

Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (Port of Leith)

Integration of hydrogen shore power for large tugboats, replacing diesel generators through a UK-first wastewater-electrolysis supply chain.

Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 6 (CMDC6)

Building on CMDC4, the PlusZero team are working towards further product innovation. The company has developed a combined heat power HICE generator for temporary, grid edge power and heat requirements.

These projects demonstrate how hydrogen can move beyond pilot activity into real-world deployment. They support industrial decarbonisation, regional economic development and the growth of a Scottish hydrogen supply chain.
