Scottish Enterprise commissioned Optimat to undertake a Techno-Economic Analysis of the energy storage market in Scotland to better understand the scope, scale, and economic contribution of the Scottish grid-scale storage supply chain.
The study also seeks to investigate the current and future market opportunity for different technologies in this supply chain to:
- Understand the scale of global, UK and Scottish demand for grid-scale energy storage systems and the technologies likely to be used
- Identify and map energy storage system projects planned for Scottish locations
- Understand the strategy and policy landscape
- Identify and categorise companies with locations in Scotland that are active, or have the potential to become active, in the grid-scale energy storage system supply chain
- Calculate current jobs and Gross Value Added that this supply chain contributes to the Scottish economy and project what this could be by 2035
- Identify relevant Scottish academic research capability in this area
- Understand the challenges faced by supply chain companies and potential support measures to overcome them
Methods
The research included an initial phase of desk research to identify potential supply chain companies, market information, university and research organisation R&D capabilities and the strategic and policy landscape. Twenty expert interviews were conducted.
Findings
The report provides insights into the current and future economic impact of the supply chain and illustrates the scale of pipeline projects compared to the energy storage capacity expected to be required by the Scottish grid electricity network. This will help Scottish Enterprise promote the supply chain in overseas markets and communicate the scale of the Scottish grid-scale energy storage market to investors.
