Be part of building Scotland's future
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Scottish Enterprise Entrepreneurship and Investment team. You’ll be responsible for the operational management of the Portfolio Management (PM) function.
The PM team manages a portfolio of around 300 equity investments made alongside private sector investors into Scotland’s most ambitious, early-stage, high-growth companies.
The role offers exciting leadership and development opportunities for the successful candidate to shape and refine our portfolio management strategy, through which we play a pivotal role in Scotland’s vibrant early-stage investment ecosystem.
The role
In this role, you’ll be responsible for carrying out and delivering our PM objectives. You’ll make sure that opportunities to strengthen and optimise the management of the portfolio are identified and fulfilled.
You’ll do this by adopting a collaborative approach within the Entrepreneurship and Investment Team and with senior colleagues across our organisation.
You’ll have direct people management responsibilities for around 10 Portfolio Specialists and will be required to coach, mentor and support them to maximise their development potential. You’ll also provide advice and guidance on a range of transactions such as follow-on investments, restructures, turnaround situations, conversions, and exits.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Operational leadership: guiding our Portfolio Specialists team, setting clear and ambitious priorities, supporting team development, and guaranteeing excellent delivery in our risk management framework
- Strategic investment leadership: working with the Head of Investment and senior colleagues to develop objectives for the PM function, introducing new approaches to help companies scale and create economic impact for Scotland
- Stakeholder relationship management: developing strong connections with internal and external stakeholders, making valuable introductions across both our organisation and Scotland's investment community to help secure additional investment for ambitious early-stage businesses
Who we're looking for
As Team Leader – Equity Portfolio, you’ll need a blend of technical investment knowledge, relationship management experience, and leadership know-how, to make sure the team continues to maximise the impact of our financial and non-financial support across the portfolio.
Your skills, knowledge, and experience should include:
- Considerable experience in private equity and portfolio management through working in private equity, corporate finance, or similar at a senior level
- Demonstrable financial and commercial knowledge with senior-level experience in the negotiation and management of complex investment decisions and structures that drive meaningful outcomes
- A robust understanding of Scotland’s economic development and funding and investment landscape, with expertise in working with early-stage, high-growth businesses in growth sectors
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels and with evidence of an ability to influence and negotiate at a strategic and senior level
- Excellent negotiation skills, with the ability to oversee and advise on the negotiation of complex commercial investment transactions in a high-volume and high-pressured environment
- The ability to swiftly assess and interpret complex information or data and present compelling propositions to colleagues
- The ability to deal with challenging and sensitive situations while applying sound judgement and influencing skills
- Excellent relationship management skills, with a highly developed network of strategic contacts and relationships
- A track record of managing multiple complex tasks and projects demonstrating an ability to devise and implement innovative solutions to problems
- Education to SCQF Level 10, or equivalent relevant professional experience
- Strong commitment to mentoring and coaching colleagues, promoting professional growth, and developing high-performing teams while fostering Scottish Enterprise’s culture and values
