Be part of building Scotland’s future

At Scottish Enterprise, we support Scotland’s most ambitious companies to innovate, scale, and help transform the economy.

The next decade will bring both major challenges and extraordinary opportunities. To meet them, we’re focused on three bold missions:

  • Building a globally competitive energy transition industry
  • Scaling Scotland’s innovation strengths into high-growth industries of the future
  • Unlocking capital investment to boost productivity and create high-value jobs

To deliver on these ambitions, we’re evolving – aligning our leadership, people, support, networks, and partnerships across Scotland, the UK, and beyond. This will ensure we’re fully focused on the transformational opportunities that can build a more successful, greener, and fairer Scotland.

Flexible, patient investment sits at the heart of our strategy. We’re building on our proven co-investment model to create strategic investment partnerships, develop innovative solutions that de-risk opportunities, and attract capital to help Scotland’s most ambitious companies grow.

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead our Strategic Investments Team within the Entrepreneurship and Investment Directorate. You’ll shape and deliver some of our most significant, impactful investments – helping drive Scotland’s long-term economic ambitions.

The team delivers tailored funding solutions across equity, debt, and project finance – tackling opportunities that fall outside our standard co-investment model. These investments support our mission priorities: scaling innovation, unlocking capital investment, and accelerating the energy transition.

As team leader, you’ll guide a small team of investment specialists to set a direction, support their development, and ensure every investment delivers impact. You’ll work with senior colleagues, company leadership teams, co-investors, and stakeholders to initiate, structure, and manage complex deals that make a tangible difference to Scotland’s economy.

Reporting to the Head of Investment, you’ll oversee performance, shape priorities, and encourage new thinking in how we approach investment – balancing commercial success with lasting economic value.

Key responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Operational leadership – leading the Strategic Investments team, you will set clear strategic and operational priorities. Support, mentor, and develop colleagues to deliver excellence in investment execution and portfolio management, aligned with our risk and governance frameworks
  • Strategic investment leadership – you'll be working with the Head of Investment and senior colleagues to shape and deliver investment strategies and programmes that back Scotland’s most ambitious companies. You'll champion new approaches that de-risk opportunities and unlock investment at scale
  • Stakeholder relationship management – you'll build and strengthen relationships with key investors and funders, including venture capital firms, corporates, lenders and specialist funders, as well as partners and stakeholders across priority sectors. You'll also represent our organisation in strategic forums and negotiations, raising our profile and influence across the investment landscape
  • Portfolio oversight – you'll oversee a portfolio of strategic investments, ensuring strong governance, regular performance monitoring and value-adding support for investee companies. You'll also guide team members on follow-on funding, restructures, exits and board engagement

Who we're looking for

As Team Leader for Strategic Investments, you’ll bring a mix of investment expertise, strategic judgement, and people leadership. You’ll have a genuine passion for making investments that drive growth and create lasting impact for Scotland’s economy.

Your skills, experience, traits, and strengths include:

  • Significant experience in private equity, corporate finance, banking, or similar investment environments
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen, with senior-level experience in structuring and negotiating complex investment deals
  • Proven leadership experience, with a commitment to mentoring and developing high-performing teams
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to interpret complex data and develop compelling investment propositions
  • Excellent relationship management and influencing skills, with a strong network across the investment ecosystem
  • Resilient and solutions-focused, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and sensitive situations
  • Deep understanding of Scotland’s economic development landscape and mission-aligned investment priorities
  • Educated to SCQF Level 10 or equivalent relevant professional experience
