The Scottish Investment Bank is the investment arm of Scotland’s main economic development agency, Scottish Enterprise. We support economic growth by increasing the supply of growth finance to Scottish businesses and helping more companies achieve their growth ambitions.

A year when investment flourished

In 2014 - 15 we:

  • Invested £66.5 million – more than double on the previous year
  • Leveraged £99 million of private investment
  • Helped over 400 companies prepare for investment
  • Added 46 companies to our portfolio and supported 5 company exits
  • Welcomed 9 new partners, 7 of which were from outside of Scotland

These investments produce economic benefits for Scotland.

Our portfolio companies contribute over 3,500 jobs to the Scottish economy.

Key growth sectors continued to shine

We continued to invest into Scotland’s growth sectors, including life and chemical sciences, energy, technology and advanced engineering, creative industries and food and drink

2014/15 investment by sector

  • We now have a growing portfolio of 275 companies across a broad range of key growth sectors.
  • Last year our investment activity generated £9.5 million of income - partly due to 5 successful exits.

Increasing momentum in renewable energy

Last year was a record year for investment through our Renewable Energy Investment Fund

  • £32.4 million invested into 21 renewable energy deals:
    • 9 deals in the community renewable sector
    • 9 deals in the marine sector
    • 3 deals supporting lower cost energy production
  • And REIF leveraged £64.5 million additional private and public sector investment.

We’re big on companies that want to grow

Scotland is bursting with dynamic businesses with big growth ambitions. We worked with a range of companies at different stages of their development – from start ups through to expanding companies going global.

  • £66.5 million
    into 155 Scottish companies with high growth potential including:
    • £3 million of investment from the Scottish Seed Fund into early stage companies
    • £10.5 million of investment from the Scottish Co-Investment Fund - into deals of up to £2 million
    • £8 million of investment from the Scottish Venture Fund – into deals of up to £10 million
    • £5.8 million of follow on investment into our portfolio companies
  • Through the Scottish Loan Fund, managed by Maven Capital Partners, we invested £6.2 million into 11 established SMEs with ambitious growth plans.
  • Overall, through these funds we leveraged a record private sector investment of £99 million.

More than money

Beyond investment, we supported Scottish companies to develop their businesses further. Our team of experienced portfolio managers and financial readiness specialists worked to deliver investor value and support continued business growth.

In the last year we helped:

  • 410 companies get ready to raise finance.
  • Our portfolio of companies achieve £342 million in turnover.
  • We also supported companies to grow internationally:
    • £182 million worth of export contracts were secured in partnership with UK Export Finance
    • 83 of our portfolio companies reported over £130 million of international sales

This support was delivered in partnership with our investment partners and colleagues in Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
