Introduction to Flexergy
Flexergy builds gas infrastructure across the compression, storage and transport sectors. This is called the midstream sector, between where a gas is produced and where it is used.
Founded in 2021, the company has been tackling one of the hardest problems facing new hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects. That problem is how to move and store gases cost-effectively, safely and efficiently.
The company’s patent-pending technology combines isothermal compression with advanced storage and transportation systems. Isothermal compression is where gas is compressed to a smaller volume and higher pressure while its temperature stays constant.
The benefits of this method include:
- More gas delivered per tube trailer
- A 35% reduction in energy use across the delivered-gas chain
- Around a 50% reduction in compression, storage and transport costs, based on Flexergy’s project modelling, while improving system availability
The team pairs industrial gas compression engineering with energy-sector finance.
Technology approach and system innovation
Compression is a necessary part of the hydrogen economy, from production and storage through to final distribution and end-use. Existing compressor technologies can be expensive, energy-intensive and complex to maintain. This creates significant cost and delivery challenges for project developers.
Flexergy has developed a novel gas handling system centred on isothermal compression technology, designed to integrate easily with advanced storage and transportation solutions.
It is one technology platform, with products specified for use with each gas, hydrogen, CO2 and biomethane. In Flexergy’s solution, more gas travels in each tube trailer. This means the same volume moves in fewer trips.
Additionally, the solution allows gases to move by road rather than by fixed pipeline. This extends the network’s reach to producers and users that a traditional pipeline will not serve for years.
SHINe's role in supporting Flexergy
Flexergy joined SHINe’s commercial support programme as it prepared for the next phase of growth and investment.
Carbon Limiting Technologies, the SHINe lead delivery partner, supported Flexergy to understand the commercial opportunity for its modular compressor technology across high-growth energy transition gas markets.
Through analysis of the hydrogen, CO2 and biomethane sectors, SHINe helped the team at Flexergy develop a clear commercial narrative and investor materials. This analysis included market dynamics, infrastructure requirements and competitor positioning. The support helped Flexergy understand the scale of the opportunity and Flexergy’s competitive advantage, supporting investor engagement and future commercialisation.
Scottish impact and commercial traction
Flexergy’s technology has been developed, tested and validated within Scotland’s hydrogen innovation ecosystem. This has built strong links across industry, academia and project developers.
Key milestones
The first project milestone is measured energy performance. Across the delivered-gas chain, Flexergy’s system uses over 35% less energy than the conventional alternative. Its containerised modular product platform is ready for first project deployments.
The second milestone is validation and Scottish university collaboration. The technology is at Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL 5) and laboratory validated. This means the technology has been validated in an environment outside of the laboratory.
This validation has been completed with independent technical due diligence by the University of Strathclyde and the Energy Technology Centre. Research collaboration with Strathclyde and the University of St Andrews has advanced key technical breakthroughs.
The third milestone is investor and grant backing. Flexergy has secured more than £650,000 in funding to date, including an initial funding round with Shell as the cornerstone investor. This was alongside ATP Fund, Ascension and angel investors with senior energy-sector backgrounds. Additionally, the project received grant funding from UK Government and Scottish Government.
The fourth milestone is international recognition. Flexergy has been named Best European Hydrogen Infrastructure Start-Up at the TechTour European Hydrogen Valleys Investment Forum 2025 in Riga, from 40 pre-selected companies.
