The Scottish Investment Bank Annual Review 2016-2017

The Scottish Investment Bank is the investment arm of Scotland’s main economic development agency, Scottish Enterprise. We work across Scotland in partnership with Highlands and Islands Enterprise and in collaboration with our partners in the public and private sector. We support economic growth by increasing the supply of growth finance and helping more companies to access finance.

Supporting business growth through investment

SIB supports a strong funding environment, helping companies to secure investment and reach their potential

In 2016-17 we:

  • Invested £63.5 million in 146 Scottish companies
  • Helped companies leverage £106 million of private investment
  • Invested £2.8 million in 5 companies, through the Scottish Loan Fund
  • Invested £5.9 million in 3 companies, through the Epidarex Life Sciences Fund
  • Our investment supports companies with international ambitions
  • Our investee companies' international sales reached over £250 million

Providing more than money

SIB helps companies to identify appropriate sources of finance, engage with funders and successfully secure the investment they need to grow their business. We also work closely with our portfolio companies to strengthen their management teams, make connections and accelerate growth.

In 2016-17:

  • Our Financial Readiness specialists worked intensively with 452 companies to help them prepare to raise investment
  • We helped portfolio companies achieve annual turnover of more than £395 million
  • Our investee companies supported over 3300 jobs 
  • We worked closely with colleagues across Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Government and with partner organisations

  • Helped companies secure more than £46 million of international investment

Growing sector strengths

We support a diverse range of businesses, and have a strong presence where Scotland has recognised competitive strengths - including financial and business services, digital, technology and engineering, life sciences, energy, food and drink in the creative industries.
